Stained Glass Design

The ins and outs of what we do

Stained glass design, repair and restoration is a craft that is as old as stained glass itself.

Harland and Co is proud to play a part not just in keeping the torch of this ancient craft lit, but in caring for some of the UK's most beautiful buildings. We stand by the belief that stained glass is far more than a stylistic feature, but a key in said building's character that deserves to be looked after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is stained glass restoration?

Stained glass restoration is the process of repairing damaged or deteriorated stained glass windows, panels and frames. This can involve cleaning existing glass, replacing broken glass, reapplying glazing and much more.

Can all types of stained glass be restored?

Most types of stained glass can be restored – however, the extent and complexity of the restoration process depends on the condition of the glass, the age of the window and the techniques used in its construction.

What is the process for stained glass restoration?

Each stained glass restoration project is its own unique undertaking, for the reasons above. Most of the time, however, we will carefully remove the stained glass from its frame and carry out the restoration at our studio.

Does the stained glass need to be removed every time?

Minor repairs and restoration works can be carried out with the glass still in situ. More extensive restorations, however, will normally require the removal of the glass.

How long does stained glass restoration take?

This varies on the size and complexity of the glass in question and the extent of the damage or deteriorating. We will endeavour to provide you with an estimate as early as possible.

What are the signs that my stained glass might need repairs or restoration?

Common signs of deteriorating stained glass include:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Warping
  • Bowing
  • Air leaks
  • Water leaks
  • Draughts
  • Windows rattling

Do you design and install stained glass?

Yes – We are able to design, manufacture and fit completely new stained glass windows or leaded lights for your property. If you are interested, please contact us to arrange a consultation.

How is stained glass manufactured?

Stained glass is manufactured by joining individual pieces of coloured glass together using a lead came. Lead came are available in a wide range of lengths and widths, allowing the manufacturer to create different levels of detail depending on the design.

How much does stained glass design or restoration cost?

This depends on the scope, size and detail of the project. We are only able to give a detailed estimate after an in-person inspection, and a final price will be provided following the conclusion of our design works.

Can I install the stained glass myself?

While it is possible to install your own stained glass fittings, this is a very delicate process with a lot of room for error. We recommend that you leave this to our team.

Do you also repair metal window frames?

Stained glass windows and leaded light typically have metal window frames, which require repairs over time. Harland and Co offer this as an additional service, saving our clients from having to source two specialists for a single restoration. You can find out more here.
